Importance of Landscape Architect in Urban Planning

Urban design was associated mainly with architecture and urban planning, and the role of landscape architecture was neglected. Landscape architects have been criticized for their urban design practices with low density, little formal sensibility, and too much open space which at the end look like suburban environments (Krieger, 2009).

But on the contrary, the urban landscape is considered to be crucial id the creation of sustainable urban environments. A landscape is shaped by both natural and cultural dynamics which also influence human lifestyles. Therefore an urban landscape is not only about green spaces within an urban environment.

The landscape comprises various land uses such as streets and squares, playgrounds, railway and canal corridors, cemeteries, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and waterfronts. Even structures in a city influence the urban landscape character.

The urban environments have a vast pressure on rural environments due to decentralization which causes loss of boundaries between urban and rural environments. Therefore it has a negative impact on natural resources which provide goods and energy for the urban dwellers. That is why sustainability has become the most important goal in urban design and planning more than ever.

Urban design approaches should not neglect the natural processes which shape and influence the quality of life in urban environments. Since ecological principles are fundamental to landscape design and planning, urban landscape design plays an influential role in creating sustainable urban environments in the context of resource management.

The Importance of Landscape Architecture on the Environment

Today, landscape architecture enjoying the greater potential for educational interchange with other design fields such as urban design and architecture than at any time in its history.

As a design medium that positively contributes to the complexities of the contemporary city and to a more equitable distribution of ecological and environmental resources, landscape architecture in urban design education is examined through its role in the creation of civic spaces and their natural and built urban character.

There are case studies that were introduced to explore two joint design studies in urban design-led jointly by the author and Professor Kim Seiyong with students from Korea University and Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

A main urban district undergoing rapid transformation in Seoul, Republic of Korea, forms the study area, where opportunities for integration of landscape architecture and urban design medium, methods and expression are explored through student projects in a range of localised, natural and constructed site conditions.

According to greentumble, landscape architecture is important to the environment for several reasons. the landscape architecture allows fewer resources to be used, produces less waste, supports recycling when possible and uses policies that achieve long-term results by. focusing on the relationship between people and the environment.

Educational requirements and Job responsibilities of a landscape architect

The landscape architects are required to have a bachelor’s degree, and they are required to have a license in most states. Some have their own businesses, while the highest percentage of landscape architects work for architectural and engineering firms.

The focus of a landscape architect’s job is to create a design plan for an outdoor area, so they need to be creative and able to visualize how a project could look depending on what features are included.

Since they have to balance client needs, budgets and other factors like environmental regulations, they need to come up with creative solutions to ensure their proposals fit within all the relevant criteria for the job.

  • Discuss project proposals with clients
  • Visit site locations and identify geographic features they may need to incorporate into their design plan
  • Draft plan proposals
  • Determine the expected cost of the project
  • Travel to worksites and check on project’s progress

If you are considering to become a landscape architect but you prefer to work outside, you may want to try to consider being a landscape technician since these professionals are the ones who are responsible for planting trees and caring for the outdoor areas that landscape architects design.

Those who are considering working as urban planners may also be interested in civil engineering since civil engineers design many of the infrastructure projects that are needed in communities.
