Environmental sustainability is the ability to thrive within a natural environment. In our current world, it usually refers to the ability of humanity and nature to co-exist. Although sustainability can be viewed as a concept that transcends the Earth, it is most clearly tied in with those aspects of the natural world that have an influence on our world.
The term sustainable development was first used by the United Nations’ Millennium Declaration in 1995. This stated that “in a globalized world where economic development is a challenge, sustainable development must focus on economic growth through a combination of political, social and economic approaches.”
Sustainable development also has many other elements. Some of these include
- The reduction of pollution
- The improvement of human health
- The promotion of environmental awareness
There are many factors that are related to environmental sustainability. These factors may involve
- Climate change
- Depletion of natural resources
- The preservation of natural ecosystems
- The prevention or correction of such threats as biodiversity loss
- Environmental degradation
Global warming, depletion of natural resources, and the preservation of ecosystems may all be connected to environmental sustainability. They are also interconnected, environmental sustainability may not only affect one aspect of environmental development, but they may also affect or contribute to the other aspects.
With the global impact that human society has on the environment, environmental sustainability is crucial. If we are to preserve our planet and preserve its ecosystems, we need to consider the ways in which we can reduce our own use of natural resources.
We also need to look at the ways in which we can protect the environments from human activity. One of the most critical factors in environmental sustainability is the protection of nature and its ecosystems. Because nature is so fragile, we cannot simply hope that Mother Nature will provide us with adequate protection.
We have to work with nature by working together with it. By using nature as a resource, we help to ensure that it is able to provide natural resources to us and to other beings and organisms that exist on or around it. This is possible only if we consider the nature and the environment as part of a whole, instead of viewing it as a single unit.
Another factor that is associated with environmental sustainability is that of the promotion of environmental awareness
As the world gets increasingly complex and sophisticated, it becomes more important for people to learn how to do their part in preserving the natural environment. People who are aware of the effects that they make on the environment are likely to do their part to prevent and minimize their own impact on the environment.
By being aware of the factors that are associated with environmental sustainability, individuals and organizations can take steps to prevent environmental deterioration and improve environmental quality. Through the promotion of environmental awareness and by taking steps to improve the health of the environment, environmental sustainability is strengthened.
The most cost-effective way of preventing environmental degradation is to avoid using resources that are scarce. Resource conservation, including the use of renewable resources, is the cheapest and most effective way of ensuring environmental sustainability. Sustainable resource use involves reducing the use of nonrenewable resources, while increasing the usage of renewable resources like sunlight and wind. Sustainable resource use also means using materials from non-renewable sources, instead of using materials that are derived from the earth.
Sustainable resource use involves using natural resources and not only to manufacture products but to also transform the natural resources into non-toxic materials that can be used as a resource for the production of new products.
Sustainable resource use also includes creating products that can help to protect the environment by making the environment cleaner. Another aspect of sustainable resource use is reducing the consumption of materials that are needed for different processes that produce raw materials, such as the production of steel and coal.
Using recycled materials instead of manufactured materials is also an important aspect of sustainable resource use. Making use of raw materials that are non-toxic, and making use of renewable resources that are carbon-free are also important aspects of sustainable resource use.
Sustainable resource use also involves reducing the number of wastes that are produced by the use of nonrenewable sources. Another element that is important in environmental sustainability is the creation of sustainable resource use. Sustainable resource use means reducing or eliminating the use of raw materials and the generation of waste through the use of efficient processes and efficient methods.
